HETLAND HAPPENINGS

Alright, so it has been a while since we've had an update. The summer schedule has been pretty good for me at work and I was starting to feel bad that we haven't put up some new pictures. Then I realized how busy this crew has been. School has ended for the year. Both Annalise and Brett loved school at Christ Memorial this year. Spring soccer has ended and summer soccer is starting. We joined a community pool and Brett and Annalise have swimming lessons everyday this summer. The princess is in Dance Class and she is having a ball. Nathaniel is getting bigger and is a happy trooper. He's a great eater and sleeper. And his older siblings absolutely adore him. He is a great addition to the crew. We have done more remodeling of our home: switched the kids' rooms around, repainted the walls, took out our carpet and had it replaced in the upstairs which meant we pretty much moved out of our home and back in, and we are now remodeling our basement..... Also, We have done some more exploring of the area visiting Dubuque Iowa, Cave of the Mounds just to the southwest of Madison, back to the Dells of course and we just got back from Montana from a summer vacation with the Ihmels gang. The airport was an absolute adventure for this crew, better put it was close to hell. We did have fun in the mountains though and the kids got to spend some time with their cousins. Next month we are getting together with the Hetland gang in the lakes of Minnesota to celebrate Grandpa Bruce's 60th birthday. Hope all is well and thanks for checking in on our crew!! the Hetlands

The kids are back to school and into their routine. Melissa has settled back into her schedule as well. We have found our new normal. Both Annalise and Brett are 100% fond of their new baby brother. Brett wants to hold him at least every couple of hours and Annalise smothers him with kisses. Nathaniel is doing fantastic. He is a great eater and sleeps some of the night. He continues to be more alert and responsive. I think he is still a little freaked out by the excessive attention from the older 2. I'm sure he'll find his way to repay the attention in the future..... We appreciate all of the warm wishes and support. Thank you! Andy, Melissa, Brett, Annalise and Nathaniel

    Dear Friends and Family,
The New Year started off with a bang for us in Madison. Nathaniel Andrew was born just hours before the clock struck Midnight on New Years Eve. Brett and Annalise were tickled. He’s doing great, growing and getting strong after a week-long stay in the ICU with breathing problems after he was born. We were fortunate to have Melissa’s brother Corey and his wife Michelle come to help us out and then my Mother come stay for almost 2 weeks as we settled into our new normal. 2007 has been the busiest year and one of the best years at our house. It’s quite amazing to back up the clock and think about the past 365 days. Just one year ago we kicked off 2007 celebrating Grandpa Ron’s 60th birthday on New Years Eve 2006 with all of Melissa’s family. We will always find time to celebrate December 31!!
We asked the kids what their favorite memories of the past year included. Our little swimmer Brett was quick to mention our trips to the Beach. Verona Beach is just south of our home and we made several trips to the Wisconsin Dells. We also enjoyed trips home to see Morgan run at the state meet and visit our families for Thanksgiving. Melissa and I were also able to escape for a week to sunny Sanibel Florida for our first getaway with no kids, and likely our last escape for several more years.
Brett turned 4 in October and continues to be our busy boy. He has developed into a delightful and polite young man. It’s scary to see him mature. He was excited about Christmas and gifts throughout December, but told us he was more excited about the baby coming. BJ is in his 2nd year of preschool and is loving it. He loves swimming and spent a good part of the year in lessons, so he can go to the beach again this summer of course. I think he’d look great ON the water, with a wakeboard.... His current flavor of the month is Ben 10, some action cartoon character. Brett has quickly become our karate/stuntman after each episode. Ben 10 also inspired Brett’s favorite Christmas gift, Ben 10 the video game. Yes, he plays video games, but you’d be surprised what he can do with the controller. He’s actually really good, enough to even impress his Uncle Nick.
Annalise is just over 2 and a half years old, and quite the spunky gal. She picks out her own clothing, insisting on cute pink dresses even on the coldest days of the year. She desires accessories and shoes. I need to get a real job soon to keep up with this one. “Tootsie” just started her first year of preschool early this winter and has merged in quite well. She loves her doll house and many princesses.
Melissa has spent the past year keeping up with the kids and their activities, many of which involve her network of friends here in Madison. She is involved several groups, and helped organize a Ball for the University to keep up with her former life as an event planner. I’m still clipping through my educational years and am now past the half way point in my surgical training as an Otolaryngologist, my fancy way of saying ENT. I keep pretty busy, but admit I’m pretty happy going to work and learning each day.
Life only gets busier for us, especially for my wonderful wife. Brett and Annalise continue to have more activities and “Than” adds a wonderful dimension. The kids adore each other and especially their new baby brother. We just feel so blessed to see them enjoy each other and blossom individually. God Bless and Happy New Year,

Andy, Melissa, Brett, Annalise, and Nathaniel Hetland

Number 3 is here, Nathaniel Andrew Hetland came into the world December 31, 2007 at 8:33pm (Grandpa Ron's birthday). He weighed 5 lbs and 13 oz, and was 18.5 inches long. We counted ten fingers and ten toes. Melissa was feeling well and we had a small New Years/Birthday Party the next day. Melissa was set for discharge home as well as our newest addition. I had taken Brett and Annalise home and planned to come back to get the rest of the family (Missy and Than). At that point our little man turned blue. He got everybody very excited and he was taken to the Newborn ICU, with a very shaken mother. He has been slowly recovering in the NICU over the past week and is starting to look much better, but still requiring a whiff of oxygen. He is recovering from Respiratory Distress Syndrome. This past week has humbled us and once again shown us how lucky we are to have 3 beautiful children and all of the graces God provides. We are also very fortunate to have very supportive family and friends that have helped us and the kids through the past week. Uncle Corey and Aunt Michelle came from Iowa and Grandma Peggy flew into Madison to allow Melissa and I to provide Nathaniel as much attention as possible. We will keep everyone updated when we are able to bring our little man home!!! God bless, the hetlands

Kari:  I hope Nathaniel is home this week. We have been thinking about you. Let me know if there is anything we can do to help. Or have whomever organizes include us.

Fall weather is here, and that means Brett is 4!! We celebrated on several occasions: with his friends at Pump It Up!, with the Ihmels family while we met in Minneapolis, and with the Hetland clan while also in.... Minneapolis. We met with the Ihmels while Coach Corey had his Iowa State team in town for a cross country meet. A few weeks later, I went with my brothers and Dad to see the Bison of North Dakota State give the mighty Gophers a lesson in smash mouth football. Unfortunately, Minnesota will not be inviting us back, as they will very likely choose to play UND or Maple Grove High School next year instead (to help recruiting as they like to say). Anyway, both kids are into the swing of school. Of course Brett has always liked getting away from us, but we are excited to see how well Annalise has taken off. She has really enjoyed this new adventure. Brett has finished up fall soccer and 'learn to skate' in Verona. Missy and I made it to a game at mighty Lambeau field with a couple of our good friends from Madison. This upcoming week, we are fortunate to expect my parents to visit and we will be heading to both of our parents over Thanksgiving. Life is always busy, and it seems busier than ever right now, even without number three in the house yet..... If that's not scary enough, Happy Halloween! from the hetlands

Labor Day has passed and appears the summer has as well. We have had a wonderful/busy summer from a visit home over memorial day, Dozer Days, our new swingset, news of baby #3, trips to the zoo, visit to see friends in Rochester, fun at the Dells, Baby Wil's baptism, Aunt Mo's visit over the 4th, kids' trip to Chicago, barbucues with friends and neighbors, the Wiggles, swimming lessons, visit from Uncles Nick and Scott, Brett's soccer and weekends at the Capital Square/UW union/Monona Terrace/Olbrich Garden. With the summer passing that means here comes school again. Brett is starting his second year of preschool and Annalise will be starting later this fall in the younger kids classroom. Please check our recent photos and enjoy the remaining days of warmth! hetlands

OH Boy, what a month August has been!!! Yes, we are adding another BOY to the mix!!!! We added pictures to August with some 3D ultrasound pictures of Baby Boy Hetland. Brett is excited and already has list of boy names. We had the ultrasound technician write the sex of #3 down and put it in an envelope. Brett opened it at dinner that night. He announced "it's a boy"! He had no idea what it said, but he was right on. Most importantly, the baby is doing fantastic and everything is moving along wonderfully. Uncles Scott and Nick came to Madison to visit and took in a Milwaukee Brewers ballgame. The kids had a great time, and I think the uncles did too! Brett's soccer season has come to an end. It started off very slowly, as he was not very excited about it. We regretted starting him in soccer, but within weeks all of that changed. He scored his first goal mid-season and he took off from there. He scored 3 times in the season finale, and ran by the sidelines announcing "I'm going for four!" Annalise is his biggest fan, cheering him on, pushing him back onto the field after halftime and follows him on the sidelines. Next year, look out Madison, here comes Annalise! Enjoy the Holiday weekend! hetlands

We hope this finds everyone having a wonderful summer. We have had a fantastic summer thus far. We were all able to visit Bismarck in late May to see Melissa's sister Morgan run at the state track meet and stay with Grandpa Bruce and Grandma Peggy. The kids loved the pool, despite the cool weather. Annalise has now started swimming lessons as well, already advancing to level 2! Brett is improving as well and absolutely loves the water. Brett and Annalise each have had their share of summer spills. Annalise tripped on the sidewalk and scuffed up her nose/cheek in May and Brett recently ran into the bleachers at a baseball game in Madison. He ended up with a small cut in his left eyebrow. The site of the kids' blood has been very difficult for Missy. We visited the Wisconsin Dells once again. This time being able to enjoy it during the summer/outdoors. The kids both love it there and are always asking about when we are going again. Otherwise we have been busy enjoying Madison, the lakes, zoo, and made a quick trip to Chicago with Morgan. Oh yeah, I almost forgot.... Hetland Baby #3 is on the way, coming to Madison mid-January 2008. Missy is doing wonderfull. Brett is excited, he wants a boy. As the summer rolls by........ the Hetlands

Plenty of new photos to see, but also plenty of new news. Annalise is exploding with new words and is able to let us know what is on her mind. She turned 2 years old 15 days ago. She had a wonderful birthday party, and even Grandma Peggy was able to make it! Spring is here and she is having a blast playing outside, especially with her new tricycle. Another milestone for Annalise is the end of the pacipher. She currently is under the understanding that it has gone to a baby that needs it more than her, her cousin Baby Wil Ihmels. Potty training is on the horizon, but her interest is quite superficial yet at this point. Annalise starts swimming classes in a few weeks. Brett is 3 and a half, loving preschool, his friends and is turning into quite the gentleman. He is very helpful around the house. We fiered the age of 3, and it has been a wonderful year for Brett so far. Her is blasting through levels in swimming, diving underwater for rings and swimming on his own!!! Wakeboarding days may be sooner than expected for this young man. Brett's greatest love right now is Shrek! He is ready for the new show in the theater in the next couple weeks. Melissa and I were able to part from the kids for longer than 23 hours for the first time. My mother came to take care of the kids, while we visited the gulfside beaches of Florida. We had a wonderful time, great weather, plenty of sun, and great food, but we were very excited to see Brett and Annalise when we made it home. Thanks Mom. We are all looking forward to more sun and outdoor adventures, stay posted for my pictures this summer. hetlands

Merry Christmas! Greetings to all, and welcome to our new home on the internet. Brett and Annalise are getting big too fast. Living too far away from most of our family, we know we need to make more pictures available to everyone to watch them grow and change.

Brett is our energetic young man. He has recently started preschool, and looks forward to starting swimming lessons again this winter. He recently was in gymnastics, but told us he would rather go to church! I don't know how to interpret that. He is infatuated with the movie "Cars", wants to go to the Wisconsin Dells (everyday we hear about it), and loves to share and play with his little sister. They have really grown together and treat each other wonderfully. How long will this last???

Annalise is now 20 months old, and is the sweetest little thing in the world. Melissa is excited that she hasn't outgrown the cuddling stage that Mr. Brett seemed to skip. She is a wonderful eater, and sleeps like she is supposed to. She loves babies, baby dolls, kitchens, puppies and she has adopted Banjo (our little poodle) as her own. They have formed a bond we didn't know was possible. We just have to learn to keep her from kissing the little poodle and feeding her secretly behind the booster seat.... She loves to dance to the radio and spin until she falls.

Melissa and I are a bit boring, so I won't waste much space on us. Missy is involved in multiple spousal groups associated with the hospital. She has made friendships with neighbors and members of our church. I am currently midway through my second year of five years of training in Otolaryngology. Say that 3 times fast. I feel blessed to have the opportunity to train in the wonderful world of ENT. Melissa and I have also enjoyed partnering as co-story tellers for the church Sunday School for 3 and 4 year olds. This past fall we kept ourselves busy with multiple home remodeling projects, and we plan on more.... Crazy or ambitious, we are enjoying them.

It's been a wonderful and busy year. We feel blessed with our children and look forward to 2007. We wish all of our family and friends health and prosperity in the upcoming year!

    God Bless,

    the Hetlands
